As women who enjoy all things outdoors, we've had our fair share of experiences when it comes to safety concerns, patronizing stereotypes and female empowerment in the backcountry. In addition to our own thoughts about feminism in the outdoors, we feel this platform is crucial in giving other women a voice to speak their minds, share their stories, and reverse the narrative that the outdoors are masculine.
While this project was initially created as an academic thesis, it is has since grown to encompass so much more than that. There is a significant need for inclusivity in and accessibility to the outdoors for people of every gender, race, economic status, and background. Although this platform mainly highlights the female narrative, our mission nevertheless is to create a safe space for everyone in nature. The three main components that our project seeks to highlight are: » Safety We aim to bring light to the wide variety of safety concerns that women face when recreating in the backcountry. These issues range from the societal expectation of fear to uncomfortable comments to physical and sexual assault. » Stereotypes There is an outdated perception of what women are capable of in the outdoors, which largely affects the female experience when recreating in the backcountry. Whether it be the expectation that women hike slowly, can't carry heavy packs, or simply can't keep up, this page highlights a plethora of women who are shattering these barriers with every step. » Empowerment Above all, it is vital that women feel supported, seen, and welcomed in the outdoor community. From climbing tall mountains to surviving in the wilderness with the bare necessities, it is this pure grit, determination, and passion for the outdoors that bonds us all. This platform serves to inspire the next generation of future female adventurers! |
